Nikola Tesla
Nikola Tesla was a visionary inventor of electrical devices. Born in Austria, just a few years before the origin of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, he studied at the University of Prague. First interested in physics, he became fascinated with electricity.
Employed as a telegraph engineer for the Austrian government, he pursued his interests in electricity in Paris and Budapest. Going to the United States in 1884, he worked with Edison and Westinghouse; later he established the Tesla Laboratory in New York, devoting himself to electrical research.
Disagreeing with Edison, who preferred direct current, Tesla created a genuinely workable method of using alternating current for electrical power; he also patented the induction and thermomagnetic motors, electric circuit controllers, the arc lamp, and many, many other truly innovative inventions. His impressive list of scientific discoveries includes the principles of rotary magnetic fields and extensive work with high voltage, as well as various transformers, induction coils, dynamos, and condensers. Some of his ideas were considered too revolutionary, such as his deriving electrical power directly from the Earths magnetic field.
